The She Rises project aims to support women, including young women, from refugee-like backgrounds, many of whom have experienced torture and trauma. The project aims to provide a safe, therapeutic space, fosters leadership skills, and facilitates connections within the community.
ASeTTS delivered a successful swimming group as part of its She Rises Women Empowerment Program with women from refugee background. This project was delivered in partnership with Royal Life Saving and Balga Leisure Centre. During the six week period 30 women from different cultural backgrounds learned basic swimming skills which they never had to the opportunity to try before joining this project. The group offered a safe woman only space for women to engage in swimming.
Swimming has given me a new sense of freedom and confidence. I never had the chance to learn before, and now I feel so much more relaxed and happier when I’m in the water. It has become my favourite way to relieve stress and feel good about myself.
Being able to swim with other women from similar even different backgrounds has helped me make new friends and feel more connected to my new community. It’s wonderful to have a safe space where we can support each other and share our experiences while learning something new.
I was very nervous and scared at first because swimming was not something I was familiar with, and I didn’t feel comfortable in mixed spaces. But having a women-only class made me feel safe and respected. Now, I look forward to it every week and feel proud of myself for trying something outside of my comfort zone.
