ASeTTS acknowledges the Whadjuk Noongar people as the original custodians of the land on which our office sits. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Western Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters, and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to Elders past and present and emerging.
ASeTTS is a human rights organisation and we support people and communities who do not have the opportunity to enjoy their rights as equal citizens and who experience fear, harassment and/or discrimination. We recongise that First Nations Australians are still fighting for the recognition of their rights in every aspect of their lives.
In strengthening our relationships with Australia’s First Peoples, our Board endorsed the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2021.
The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to all Australians, to support the recognition of First Nations peoples in the Australian Constitution. It calls for structural reform including constitutional change.
The Voice to Parliament campaign, is part of the Government’s commitment to implement the Uluru Statement of the Heart and a referendum will be held later this year to recognise First Nations Voice to Parliament.
All Australians will be asked the question:
“A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.
Do you approve this proposed alteration?”
The Voice will be a representative body made up of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across the country and the proposed law will determine whether this new body will have input into matters relating to social, economic and cultural wellbeing of First Nations people.
ASeTTS supports the Voice to Parliament to give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities the right to have a say on policies and laws that impact their lives.
We walk alongside First Nations peoples for a better future and support their right to have input into decisions affecting their communities.
