Latin American Community Project

The Latin American Community Project (2023–2025) was a two-year, co-designed initiative led by ASeTTS to support the mental wellbeing, social integration, and resilience of Latin American humanitarian entrants in Perth. In 2024-2025 the project engaged 52 participants through 12 culturally responsive activities. Activities were developed in collaboration with a community working group and included psychoeducation, peer-led workshops, health promotion, legal and settlement sessions, social and recreational events, and a community healing session through story telling.

Evaluation findings highlighted increased knowledge, emotional safety, and motivation among participants, particularly through peer-led and creative formats. The project’s inclusive design, use of culturally significant venues, and integration of service information contributed to its success and earned the 2025 Innovation Award from the Australian Health Promotion Association. Recommendations for future service delivery include leveraging storytelling, promoting peer role models, tailoring vocational content, and ensuring gender-responsive, family-friendly programming to better support Latin American humanitarian entrants.
