Throughout 2025-6 the Ethnic Communities from Myanmar Project has delivered a series of activities to strengthen community connections and wellbeing through a range of co-designed activities and programs that:
• support mental health,
• help community members to build meaningful relationships across generations,
• share life experiences, stories, and cultural traditions, and
• to learn skills and information that help them thrive in Australia.
This project, led by our Community Development Cultural Project Assistant, Hau Cin Nang Gualnam, supports newly arrived Myanmar ethnic communities who have settled in Western Australia as refugees and are now rebuilding their lives in Australia.
ASeTTS delivered a comprehensive community project for refugee-background ethnic groups from Myanmar, combining psychosocial support, legal education, settlement assistance and safety awareness activities.
Across 16 sessions and 171 recorded attendances, participants strengthened their understanding of child protection laws, legal rights, settlement processes, road and beach safety, and everyday life in Australia. Culturally responsive psychosocial groups fostered wellbeing, confidence, English language development, and social connection.
The program responded to the ongoing impacts of torture, trauma, displacement, and resettlement challenges, helping participants build resilience, reduce isolation, increase community participation, and navigate life in Western Australia with greater confidence and independence.
