The CICT program aims to provide support to primary school students from refugee backgrounds as they transition to mainstream schooling. The program focuses on schooling in WA, discrimination and bullying, family, friendships and forming community links.
In 2023-2024, three CICT group programs were delivered to 30 newly arrived primary school aged children. The CICT program covers topics such as transitioning and understanding mainstream schooling and high school, developing resilience and coping methods when it comes to bullying and discrimination and developing meaningful friendships. Participant reported the following activities as highlights from there CICT experience:
- Sport (AFL, Basketball and Soccer) clinics
- Recreational activities (swimming and beach safety)
- Art, drumming and theatre activities
End of program evaluations showed that:
- 99% felt safe during the program / 1% were neutral
- 95% felt listened to by ASeTTS staff / 5% were neutral
- 94% learned something new about High School / 6% were neutral
- 94% tried new things/activities / 6% were neutral
- 97% I would recommend this program to my friends / 3% were neutral
48 clients and their families participated in 4 Cultural & Recreational Activities within the community, including accessing the ballet (‘Nutcracker’ and ‘La Bayadère’) Beach Safety and Aboriginal Cultural Walk.
We are lucky that we have service like ASeTTS that provide useful [information and activities].
This was my first time in the water, and I felt safe…and we need more programs like this.
Additionally, 10 children, transitioning from Primary to High School, attended the two-day Cross-Cultural Expressive Art program, with the majority going on to participate in the Dr Krishna Somers Expressive Art Youth Program.
